The Pet Professor Humane Education Program features engaging lessons on various aspects of our relationships with animals. Safety, responsibility, and compassion are the messages conveyed through programs that are as interesting as they are fun! If you don't see exactly what you are looking for, give us a call, we are very flexible and love to work with kids of all ages.

On-site Programs Year Round

Sharing Sam – Designed for preschool and kindergarten age children, this fun program features a short story and an interactive visual presentation to introduce young children to the concept of caring for animals. Concludes with a tour of the shelter.

BARK – This stands for Be Aware, Responsible and Kind. The program includes a video and focuses on how to safely interact with animals, getting clues from their body language. It’s an important lesson in safety that all children should experience. Includes lesson, shelter tour and a fun animal related craft project.

Pet Care – Focuses on what type of care dogs, cats and other small animals need from their owners in order to be happy and healthy. This interactive program is great for kids with pets and those getting ready to adopt. Many Girl Scout troops working on their Pet Care badge choose this program. Includes lesson, shelter tour and a fun animal related craft project.

Throwaways – For middle and high-school age students, includes a video about the epidemic of pet overpopulation in the U.S. today and a tour of the APF facilities. Culminates in a discussion and brain-storming session about what teens can actively do to help homeless pets. Participants will leave with a variety of helpful informational materials. Great for groups looking to do community service projects.

To Schedule a Program Programs run about 1.5 hours and may be scheduled afternoons on Tuesdays through Fridays. Donations of $3 per child along with suggested items from our Wish List are appreciated. For groups unable to provide a donation, programs will be provided free of charge. To schedule a program, call 374-3944, ext. 119. Please make requests at least two weeks in advance of your desired date.

Adopt-a-Classroom Program

Educating children about humane issues is one of the most important and far-reaching ways we can help animals. The Adopt-a-Classroom program is one way we help teachers deliver humane lessons to their students. Through this program, we provide free subscriptions of the award-winning newspaper KIND News to elementary classrooms. Its emphasis on humane values, such as fairness, compassion, and responsibility seeks to encourage good character in children.

A limited number of free subscriptions are provided each year. Please contact us for more information at 374-3944, ext. 119. All requests for the 2008-2009 school year must be made before May 1, 2008.
