Special Rabbit Program Coming to the APF on Saturday, August 16

Rabbits are the third most relinquished animal entering animal shelters across the country. Many people are captivated by the cuteness of bunnies, but do little homework before they adopt and sometimes find they were really not prepared to care for them properly. Typically, shelters overflow with rabbits shortly after Easter and often people abandon them outside, where they cannot survive.
On Saturday, August 16th, the Animal Protective Foundation and the NYS House Rabbit Society (www.therabbitresource.org) are teaming up to help out both perplexed owners and those people who want to help the many abandoned rabbits in the Capital District. Starting at 1:00 pm, the first hour of the program is for new rabbit owners or those considering adopting from a shelter or rescue group. We will review the basics of feeding, housing, spaying and neutering and demonstrate handling and nail clipping techniques. You may also bring your own rabbit along in a carrier if you’d like. Hopefully, by educating early-on in the adoption process, new rabbit owners will better understand their pets and their specific needs and there will be fewer rabbits relinquished to shelters.
The second part of the program, starting at 2:00 pm, is more advanced. The NYS House Rabbit Society is hoping people with an interest in providing indoor foster space will attend. This session will focus on fostering requirements and discuss behavioral and medical issues more in depth. The Rabbit Society is desperately in need of fosterers in the Albany area to assist local shelters and also help with rescue calls which come regularly. If you cannot foster, but can help with fundraising, public outreach, transport or actual rescue operations, please also attend, your assistance would be welcome.
The presenter will be Davida Kobler, Chapter Manager of the NYS House Rabbit Society, who is licensed nationally and has extensive experience with fostering injured bunnies and educating the public regarding rabbit care. Both sessions are free and open to the public to those over the age of 12. For more information or to register, please contact Kim at the Animal Protective Foundation at (518) 374-3944, ext. 119.

Purchase of Spa Products Benefits APF

The APF has partnered with Keyano Aromatics to offer a line of scrumptious natural and cruelty-free spa products to our supporters, with up to 50% of the proceeds benefiting the shelter. All of the products are manufactured locally in Saratoga County and are distributed to places like Bellagio in Las Vegas, the Ritz and over 3,000 spas around the world.

Bill Comiskey, president of Keyano Aromatics, is a doctor of naturopathy and first developed the lotions, shower gels, lip glosses and candles for Kimberley’s-A Day Spa of Latham, which is owned by his wife. Mango, chocolate and cranberry are just a few of the heavenly scents. The APF will offer Keyano’s Champagne & Rose Butter Cream this year as a Fireplug 500 walker gift.

You can sample their whole product line at the Fireplug 500. But if you can’t wait, just go to www.keyanorea.org to order online. Click on “online order form” and be sure to mention the APF as the sponsor organization.
